MANKATO, MINNESOTA—On December 26, 1862 on the day after Christmas, 38 Dakota (Santee Sioux) were put to death by hanging. The deaths were ordered by President Abraham Lincoln, the Great Emancipator.

The hangings were the result of the Dakota War of 1862, which terminated the rights of Dakota people from living in Minnesota at that time.

Over and above the U.S. military’s objection, my great grandfather Nicolas Aldana and three others were hanged on Dec. 12, 1901 in Cavite, Philippines. The American civilian authorities listened to suggestions that with Aguinaldo’s pledge of allegiance, the Philippine insurrection will end. Instead the insurrectionists led by landowning elite waged a guerilla warfare that proved to be the precursor to the American experience in Vietnam 62 years later.

In July 1902 when Aguinaldo was released and decided to go visit his home in Cavite Viejo, he inquired what protection the US military could give him. It should be noted that Gen. Antonio Luna whom Aguinaldo ordered killed lived in Ilocos Norte. My great grandfather lived in Las Pinas, the town Aguinaldo must pass through to reach Cavite Viejo, Cavite.
